Circulatory System // Signal Morning

I downloaded this a couple days ago from the Music To Do Drugs To blog after reading a good review but had not heard anything about them before. I listen to it for the first time today and must have played it 10 times already. The band are called Circulatory Systems and released a couple LP's back in 2001. The new album is called 'Signal Morning' and isn't due out til August sometime. It's very Experimental / Psychedelic Rock, similar to Spiritulized. I'm so happy I just stumbled across these guys and really recommend downloading the album.

La Cave returns again this Thursday 11th June at Smokestack. Playing Psych, RNB, Beat and Soul on beautiful 45's. La Cave is becoming one of my favourite club nights to go to. With great vibes, great tunes and free entry you can't go wrong.

If the 60's isn't your thing on Thursday also sees Kap Bambino playing at Nation of Shopkeepers. The french due are often described as 'Synth Punk' and draw comparisons to Crystal Castles (although they have been around much longer and are much better). Their fast industiral electro-metal beats and front woman Caroline Martial's wild vocals makes great memorable live performances. As the guys over at Nation of Shopkeepers are so nice this event is FREE like pretty much everything they put on. Have a listen to their latest single 'Red Sign' below which is from their third album 'Blacklist' out 16th June.

Bad Taste calling themselves 'Leeds foulest and filthiest clubnight' is going to be hosting the 2nd room at Bad Sneakers on Saturday at The Faversham. A very different direction for Bad Sneakers as Bad Taste propose to play "brain bending Psych, Proto Punk, Punk, Post Punk, S-punk, Deathabilly, 60s garage, Acid Psych, Death Jazz, Glam Rock, Queer Pop, No Wave, Doom and Nerdcore. Songs you never knew how much you loved until you were locked in a torture chamber with them blaring in your shriveled ear holes, dark side of decades past, present hellraisers and other ear-raping classics...". Should be great fun hearing some different records being played in Leeds.

Twisted // 7" E.P Released

Twisted's first single, originally released on CD-R has been given the posterity it deserves on a pressing of 45rpm 7" vinyl. Twisted, now based in Leeds with a new line up, made this record in South Wales last December with a few members of Facel Vega lending a hand. The music is fast, garage-influenced melodic punk with the same hints towards mid-80s DC emo that have marked both State Run and Facel Vega.

Hatcham Social release 'Crocodile' which the second single from their debut album 'You Dig The Tunnel I'll Hide The Soil' which was produced by Tim Burgess. The track as ever is a well written pop song but am surprised it's been released as a single, as it isn't a stand out track for me. On the flip side you will find exclusive track 'Dissected'.

I know this leaked over month ago but it's finally been released on vinyl. If you haven't been the biggest fan Sonic Youth's more recent albums 'The Eternal' has taken the songwriting style from 2006's 'Rather Ripped' but then also brought back stuff from older albums like 'Sister' and 'Daydream Nation' so I recommend giving it a listen. It is a great record and is up there as one of my favourite Sonic Youth albums.

So I finally got around to updating our Spotify playlist. This one is in tribute to The Brianjonestown Massacre who I've been listening to a lot recently. The front man Anton Newcombe is a genius making consistently good records, but even more amazingly they all have very distinctly different styles. Shame that he is battling with drug addiction and alcoholism which contributes to his deluded view on life (see documentary DiG! and the video below).

Cherbourg Interview

London folksters Cherbourg played the Royal Park Cellars on Thursday. I had a quick chat before the show with Andrew Davie and Kevin Jones from the band about their new EP 'Into The Dark', an upcoming album and the 'London Folk Scene'.

How did you get together as a band?

Kevin Jones: Well, Davie (singer/guitar) went to school with Phil (fiddle/guitar) and they played together in a band called Davie Fiddle And The Lucky Egg for a while. Me and Chris (drums) were playing in a separate band at the time. We all became friends, then Chris's and my band split up. We wanted to keep playing together and then, well I'm not sure how it happened really, but [Cherbourg] happened.

Did you have an idea of the kind of music you wanted to play when you started out or did it take a while to find your 'sound'?

Andrew Davie: I think when we first started [what we were playing] was really quite folky. We would have a song and everything else would just sit behind it. There would be standard bass parts, standard drumming, the song was what mattered; nothing else did. Now, we seem to have moved quite a long way from that; we're going into rockier pastures at the moment. We're writing now to be able to record an album in September and, to be honest, it's quite hard to tell now what that's even going to sound like.

KJ: It's still evolving, I guess. Although I think we are starting to get a fairly clear idea now of what we're trying to achieve.

You released your first EP "Last Chapter of Dreaming" in February and your new EP "Into the Dark" was out on Monday. Do you see the second record as a continuation of the first or do you see it taking a new direction?

AD: I think [the new EP] is a continuation; six of the eight songs - that span across the two EPs - were written in the same two week period. There's continuation lyrically, definitely. We even use the same line on both EPs. I think [the sound] has evolved; we've moved slightly more towards electric guitars, the violin is still there but it's not quite as prominent as it was on the first record.

What is the song writing process like for you? Do you write collaboratively or does one person write everything? How does it work?

KJ: Normally Davie writes the main body of a song. Not always though, sometimes Phil writes songs. Some songs come together in two minutes but with some we have to really work on to make them feel right. It really depends on the song.

AD: Also, I think we're not necessarily trying to do the obvious thing. We want to serve the song and make it sound as good as possible by highlighting its good bits. We're also keen to keep it interesting; as much for ourselves as much as for the listener. I'm quite interested in 'tension and release' in songs.

It seems that you are often compared to the likes of Mumford & Sons and Noah And The Whale. I wondered how you felt about being placed in that "London folk scene"? Do you like that label or is it just a pain now?

AD: It's really nice in some ways but its, well it's not irritating, but I just don't think it's quite correct.

KJ: Its confusing because we are really good friends with those people - Mumford & Son, Alessi's Ark, Laura Marling – and when we started out, it made sense to make those comparisons more. But where we are now; not so much. But it's an honour, nevertheless, to be compared to bands like that because they're all fantastic.

AD: We were all friends quite a while ago. There was a place called the Bosun's Locker where people used to hang out and write songs, everyone knew everyone. At that point it was just singer-songwriters going down to a pub for a laugh and showing each other what they were doing. All the bands have shot out from that and are doing their own different things and the comparisons were made all the time. I always think it's quite weird that people talk about a London 'folk scene'; it should be labelled that after its really established. I don't feel like it's quite there yet, to be honest. Only two bands at the moment – Laura Marling and Noah And The Whale – are the only ones anyone has heard on a really wide scale; on a Radio 1 type level.

Is it encouraging though to see that those two bands have 'made it'?

KJ: Yeah, very much so.

You're on a fairly lengthy tour at the moment. How's it going?

AD: Pretty good.

KJ: Yeah, it's been really fun.

Have you played much outside of London before?

KJ: No, we've done a couple of supports before but there are a lot of places on the tour that we're playing for the first time. So it's quite exciting to play new places.

How are the shows going, do people seem receptive to the music?

AD: Yeah, definitely. People are a lot nicer outside of London [laughs].

Finally, what have you got planned for the next few months. Are you playing any festivals over the summer?

KJ: Yeah, we're playing Bloom Festival, Blissfields Festival and Lounge on the Farm. But we didn't want to overdo the festivals because of the album; we want to get really stuck in and involved with that. We're having a summer of working and writing, I guess.

AD: Album, album, album!

The Clean // New Album

Firstly sorry about the lack of post the last few weeks, with exams it's hard to find the time and unfortunately posts are going to be become even more few and far between when me and Tom depart on our different travels over summer.

I have just found out one of my favourite bands The Clean (who I wrote about The Clean a few months ago here.) are going to be releasing a new album, their first new record in 8 years. The album titled 'Mister Pop' is going to be released on 8th September on Merge Records. You can download 'In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul' which is going to be on the new album below. They no longer sound the same punk band who wrote tracks like 'Beatnik' as I can only describe the new song as indie-pop but it's still a nice listen. Tracklisting and download below.

Hunting and Gathering // Sunday 31st May

Hunting and Gathering's second installment is this Sunday at Milo and it looks like its going to be super fun. The guys running the night seem to have such a great ethos, running a free night, trying to find new talent and giving them a platform to perform on. The night is not only is there for entertainment but has some more meaning behind it. This month is celebrating 30 years of Hip-Hop but also Metal, Hardcore, Punk and Surf. Although at first this seemed to be a very strange mix I think the connection is meant to be the drive and passion behind the music. Can't wait, see you there.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre have released a new E.P titled 'Smoking Acid', vinyl limited to just 1000 copies I recomend getting hold of one asap. The E.P features 5 new tracks by the band, much rawer than their previous albums but still the same pcychadelic rock feel but it's been taken more towards shoegaze. Cover artwork is a collaboration between Anton Newcombe & Icelandic artist Jon Samundur Auoarson.

Last Week In Leeds

The past week in Leeds has been eventful to say the least with the numerous bands who have played and the opening of the new venue, Nation of Shopkeepers. Very happy to have a day of rest as it's been so hectic. I'm keeping the reviews short due to the number of bands that have played since Wednesday.

Wednesday saw The Iron Wagon hosting an event at TJ's Woodhouse.

Gringo Star: Another band hailing from the Atlanta garage rock scene. Giving a pretty good tight live performance with catchy tunes, I do feel they are just a much more polished poppy version of Black Lips, which looses half the appeal for me.

Times New Viking: A band I haven't always been into but now the third time seeing them I'm totally converted. Their emotional live performances are better than their records, for me the best band of the night.

Mika Miko: The biggest let down of the night. From the few tracks I'd heard I didn't go in expecting much but came out even more disappointed.

Black Lips: Great band that I always expect to give great live performaces. Was slightly dissapointed with them compared to previous times I'd seen them, lead singer Jerard didn't seem to be feeling it (this could have been something to do with a date with the courts the following day). Possibly the reality is the new album just wasn't as 'Good Bad Not Evil' meaning shows on the '200 Million Thousand' tour just aren't as good.

Next up The Pains of Being Pure at Heart on Thursday at Cockpit.

The Manhattan Love Suicides: Didn't catch much of their set but wasn't feeling it at all. Found it pretty boring and monotonous.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart: Because I love their record so much I was slightly disappointed with their live performance. On record everything that makes it for me is how well produced and perfect sounding it is. Although I appreciate live performances loose a lot of this I got the impression the band aren't that emotionally about the record making them give a soulless performance.

Next up the One day festival Stag and Dagger came to town at various venues across the city. Unfortunately I only managed to see three acts.

Abe Vigoda: What a fantastic start to the night with these guys giving an amazing energetic performance. Playing all my favourite tracks from 'Skeleton' and the new E.P 'Reviver' couldn't asked for anything more.

Vivian Girls: Played to a busy show at the Library. Their Lo-Fi indie rock seemed to go down well with the crowd but most people seemed to be comenting on their beauty rather than their musical talent.

Telepathe: I had heard bad thing about Telepathes shows and so I wasn't surprised to be disapointed. Vocals were out of key, the drum machines sounded totally different to the record and I wasn't quite sure what they were actually doing live apart from triggering drum loops.

Saturday saw the opening of a new venue A Nation of Shopkeepers which is a fantastically decorated Bar/Venue which is going to place you can go in the day and have some food as well a night playing host to DJ's and bands from across the world. Opening night saw DJ sets from Lovefoxx of CSS which wasn't great but saw some decent bands and was a very successful night. I can see myself spending a lot of time and money at this place.

The Old Romantic Killer Band: Just two local guys one on drums the other on guitar playing energetic Blues/Grunge influence rock n' roll. Entertaining to watch and will definetly make the effort to see them again.

Dinosaur Pile-Up: Some more locals lads playing 90's grunge. Wasn't really for me but they knew how the work the crowd who all seemed to really enjoy it.

Sunday saw Deerhunter at the Brudenell.

Monster Killed By Lazer: First support band and I was really impressed dispite making some clear mistakes in the set. I wasn't a fan of everything but and times I was reminded of This Heat and others by MRR-ADM.

Bilge Pump: Really not doing it for me , surprised see they did seem to have some kind of following though.

Sian Alice Group: Again not really doing it for me. They just seemed to have a nice idea which got louder over time, pretty boring to watch.

Deerhunter: Did not dissapoint me in the slightest, although playing more stuff from old album then expected it's only encouraged me to listen to them more. Live are a really tight band and Bradford Cox is an entertaining front man. Doing a 4 track request encore was pretty fun to watch then Bradford did a stand up session at the end of the gig, where he was just playing with the crowd for his own entertainment more than anything.

Last of all was an all-dayer at A Nation of Shopkeepers hosted by Good Form Club. I turned up super early to go to the record fair only to find out it wasn't on, dispite this dissapointment it was a really good day with great DJ sets by Mark from Jumbo Records and Felix from The Golden Owl.

Twisted: Once again was a pleasure to watch these guys play their 'garage punk meets 80s DC post hardcore'. Possibly being slightly out of place on the bill the guys still gave an great show which I certainly enjoyed.

Pengilly's: I was pleasantly surprised seeing these guys play as it isn't something I would normally enjoy. Their multi-instrumental talent was undeniable and a pleasure to watch.

The XX: I was unfortunate enough to have to watch another gig by this band. My opinion remains the same as the post I made a couple weeks ago.

So it was a very hectic week. I'm looking forward to relaxing over the next few days but this weekend there is even more to see and do.

NEU! one of my favourite bands of all time, are having an album released in tribute to them. The duo, Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother from Dusseldorf formed the band after leaving the electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. NEU! regarded as being the originators of Krautrock had a huge influence on a number of artists. As they were such a huge influnce the album features liner notes from bobby gillespie, lcd soundsystem, School of Seven Bells, Sonic Youth aswell as others. It features unreleased tracks from School of Seven Bells, La Duesseldorf, rare tracks by Oasis, Foals and Holy Fuck awell as a bunch of other bands.

Dinosaur Jr.'s 9th Studio album 'Farm' is released today. Haven't been able to listen to the album yet, however last week the band gave away the track 'I Want You To Know' for free via their website which I enjoyed so hopefully the album will be just as good.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart release the stand out track 'Young Adult Friction'. It's a brilliant slightly dreamy shoegazey, noise pop song which is irrisistable. You can catch them live at Cockpit on Thursday 21st May.

I'm not going to go into a huge thing about whats going on this week as I've been talking about all the events for the last month. But pretty much the next week is jam packed full great gig.

We Fun // Atlanta Scene Documentary

So I just watched this documentary called 'We Fun' which is about the music scene in Atlanta, Georgia and how its changed over recent years. Includes a bunch of interviews with different bands, promoters, journalists and record label owners. If you haven't heard about the Atlanta scene the two bands that have really been a big product of it are Deerhunter and Black Lips. The majority of the film does focus just on the Black Lips but it has introduced me to a few other bands which I'm going to check out.

It's being streamed on the Pitchfork website for one week only so worth a watch. Also seemed pretty relevant as Black Lips play TJ's Woodhouse on Wednesday 20th May and Deerhunter at The Brudenell on the 24th May, can't wait.

Music Without Tears mixed by Passions

This has was posted by the guys over at DiscError a few days ago but I only just got around to listening to it. It's a mixtape being put out by NY based clothing label Mishka and mixed by Brooklyn producer Passions. Titled 'Music Without Tears' it features some obscure post-punk as well as some classics, industrial dance and a bunch of the tracks on the DiscError label, it's certainly worth a listen. It's been acompanied by some amazing artwork from Sandra Chi & Ciaran O’Shea. Download it from the link below.

David Byrne // Ipso Facto

Listen to an interesting interview from the legendary David Byrne on Radio 6 here. He talks about his relationship with music, from his early influences to his new musical project 'Playing The Building', which comes to The Roundhouse in London in august. He has also announce a new live E.P titled "Everything That Happens Will Happen on This Tour, David Byrne on Tour: Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno". It features 4 live tracks form his 2008 album with Brian Eno, go to his website to download it. It's also worth going to David's website and downloading his monthly radio shows. The shows lasting 3 hours long focus on different area's of music, the current playlist is made up of tracks where he has collaborated with different artists.

Ipso Facto have uploaded a new track 'You Don't Own Me' to their myspace. It's the first track since keyboardist, Cherish Kaya left the band due to arguments with other members. The band currently playing with a backing track are auditioning for a new keyboardist. The track is a melodramatic pop song where Rosalie's amazing, powerful vocals are really shown. Have a listen.

Neils Children after being together a decade, and coming across a number of obstacles have released a full length album, "X.Enc". The band have put the record out on their own label Structurally Sound and has surprised me how much I've enjoyed listening to it. Previously the only track I knew particularly well was "I Hate Models" which although I have strong nostalgic feelings towards, it wasn't the greatest song. The record as expected sounds very post-punk with tracks like "Sometimes It's Hard To Let Go" but some tracks like "An Exchange" have been fused this with dark atmospheric tribal drums.

New York's Telepathe and Effi Briest join forces and cover each others tracks for a super limited 7". Telepathe remix Effi Briest's "Mirror Rim" and turn it into their own no wave song with their signature vocals and beats. Effi Briet cover "Chrome's On It" which becomes a spacey psych track which you can lost in. Remember to catch Telepathe at Stag and Dagger on the 22nd May.

Vivian Girls return with new 7" "Moped Girls" and on the flip side "Death". Unfortunately I went to try and buy this today but neither Crash or Jumbo had it, so I still haven't heard it. From what I've read the only place you can get hold of it is Rough Trade. Also if anyone finds MP3's of these tracks link me up please. The Horrors - Who Can Say from IM // UR on Vimeo.

The Horrors first physical single release from the new album is "Who Can Say". It is undeniably a good track, however it is clearly the most commercial song and is their attempt to convert their critics. Music video again by The Jesus and Mary Chain's former member Douglas Hart which is also much more mainstream compared to the fantastic "Sea Within A Sea" video. You can catch them at Cockpit on the 7th June with support from the fantastic Factory Floor.

Kasms release their debut album "Spayed" today. When i first heard this this band I was quite interested in them, however having heard quite a few tracks I've started to really dislike them. From the tracks I have heard off the album it doesn't look like my opinion will change.

Leeds based label Dance To The Radio last week (4th May 09) released the first of a series of four 12" singles. The first featured Wonderswan, Pulled Apart By Horses, Broadcast Society and Bear Hands. For me the only track that stood out was Wonderswan's "Hey Nature" the calm vocals over scuzzy guitars made me love it. I'm going to need to see these guys live next time they play.

A friend of mine used Dave Porter's track 'I'm The Boss' in a short video he made here. The first time I heard it was tonight and I must have played it 20 times already. It's a genius catchy psychedelic folk track which is completely irresistible. Download it below with two other tracks 'Why I Can't Love You' and 'Where Do Cloulds Go,' which are also both great offerings, from I assume a fairly unknown artist due to the lack of coverage on the net.

Also this is a perfect time to mention this friends current musical project Clout which is him and two other guys. Although only two songs on the myspace the potential these guys have is clearly evident. Very experimental sounding taking influence krautrock, psychedelia and dubstep. Have a listen here.

'Primary Colours' the new album from The Horrors has been one of the most talked about albums of this year so far. The band have gone in a very different direction to their debut album, 'Strange House' which I wasn't a big fan of. Often being blamed of being image over substance but with his new record have really shown any doubters that they are very talented musicians. The album has been described as been a 'record collectors' album which isn't surprising considering the vast collection of records these guys have. You can see very distinct parts taken from My Bloody Valentine and Joy Division. The first track they released 'Sea Within A Sea' could be argued as being a rip off of krautrock legends Can's 'Mother Sky' and 'Scarlet Fields' of the Swiss band Grauzone's track 'Eisbär' download them below and listen yourself. Although I do have my criticisms the album is by far the best of 09 so far.

The New Thing is one of my favourite blogs. Based in London and blogging about "post-punk / noise / experimental / electronic / psych SOUNDS". They have a knack of finding the best new bands before anyone else, recently tipping bands like The Neat and White Rogue both worth listening to.

Italo-Disco duo Heartbreak have recorded a mini mix for Vice Magazine called “Grandes Exitos de Ayer y Hoy”. It's full of great disco tracks and they even dropped The Horrors new single 'Sea Within A Sea'. Remember to catch Heartbreak on the 'NME Radar' tour on 7th May at Cockpit, the other acts on the bill may be terrible but it would be worth it so see Heartbreak perform live.

London wonder boys S.C.U.M release their second single online today. 'Warsaw' it is the first of a number of releases under the title 'Signals'. The track is dark, mesmerising and totally brilliant. Remember you can catch them live on Wednesday 29th at Josephs Well which should not be missed. They may also be supported by An Experiment On a Bird In The Air Pump but this hasn't been confirmed on the bands myspace.

R O M A N C E are one of my favourite bands around currently. About to go on a U.K tour with The White Rose Movement and Ulterior so if you can make it to one their shows I definitely would. Currently you can buy a E.P from their myspace. The E.P contains three great songs with post-punk guitars with the most fantastic powerful vocals.

Threat Manifesto // Twisted // 25th April

"Garage punk meets 80s DC post hardcore" - I'm not going to pretend to know what that really means but apparently that's what Twisted play, and I like it. Twisted are a new band in Leeds and last night saw them play the Peanut Gallery in the Leeds University Union; a collaboratively run, free space that seems the perfect setting for a gig like this. Twisted gave a fantastic high energy performance, playing songs from their first EP 'Daydreams' (which can be downloaded for free here) as well as some very promising new tracks.

Threat Manifesto are a hardcore punk band from South Wales who after spending the day 'soaking up Leeds' gave a fairly shambolic performance. They were enjoyable none the less though; their passion and energy easily making up for any sloppiness.

The Breeders // Fate To Fatal E.P

The Breeders have come a long way since forming back in 1988 with Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. Now after many line-up changes it mainly consists of Katie Deal and twin sister Kelley Deal. They are probably best know for their single hit single 'Cannonball' released in 1993. No longer aiming for chart success with they previous experimental records. Their new E.P 'Fate to Fatal' is fantastic and for me hard to understand how anyone could dislike it. The video of for the title track can be seen above, the other 3 tracks on the E.P are much more relaxed and a great listen. The very limited edition vinyl E.P released on 4AD has already sold out. You can catch The Breeders live at All Tomorrows Parties on the 14th, 15th and 16th May.

The Big Pink // The XX // A Grave With No Name

If you were lucky enough to be a The Cockpit last night you would have witnessed one of the best gigs I've been to in ages. First up was Mt.Jade's A Grave With No Name, their opening track full on feedback didn't set high expectations for the rest of the set. However after short 5 song set I had been totally won over their lead singers soothing voice coming from through the discordant sounds reminding me of 90's grunge and shoegaze. Can't wait for more releases from these boys. You can see the music video for their track 'The Underpass' above.

The XX although not being a particularly big fan, their live performance with still disappointing. The every song had the same MPC drumbeat, guitar riffs and dull vocals. After having enjoyed the previous band so much it was a total buzz kill.

Headliners The Big Pink brought the standard back. Opening with their first single 'Too Young To Love' and continued with a scuzzy, drone, wall of sound powered by twin keyboards, bass and solid drums. But you would still drift away in the melody and vocals. Their performance relying on lighting and smoke machines just added to the atmosphere of the music making it a complete aural and visual pleasure. You could understand all the hype in the media about this band. Remember to download their latest single in the post below.

The Legendary Sonic Youth have launched the first MP3 from their new album 'The Eternal' due to be released on 8th June. The track is titled 'Sacred Trickster' and is a great signature hardcore Sonic Youth track and is my favourite song they have released in the last 5 years. Which makes 'The Eternal' which will be the bands 16th album looks promising. The band play a secret show on the 27th April at The Scala, London and have been confirmed for the My Bloody Valentine-curated ATP Nightmare Before Christmas to be held at Butlins, December 4th - 6th, 2009.

The Big Pink who have been named the band to watch in 09 so far have not disappointed. Their second single 'Velvet' is a loud, dirty, shoegaze epic track. Deerhunter for me the band of 2008 just don't stop churning out new music. Last year the released 'Microcastle' with 'Weird Era Cont' and are now releasing a new E.P titled 'Rainwater Cassette Exchange'. Due to be released digitally on 18th of May and on the 8th June on CD. The digital release is going to be mark the start of their U.K tour in London and they will be coming to Leeds on 24th May at The Brundenell Social Club.

Record Store Day is being held worldwide this Saturday 18th April.

"The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Franscisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April."

This year Crash Records will be participating hosting some live bands in the basement thought the day, free giveaways and competitions. Jumbo Records are also participating with the event

Health have delivered their best song so far in the form of "Die Slow". They have combined both their loves for noise and dance to bring this great industrial dance track. On the flip side is a great Pictureplane remix making this limited 7" is worth getting.

The Juan Maclean bring you their second album "The Future Will Come". They have described it as "SINTETIKA Nu Kraut Disco" and you can see why, as their krautrock, italo disco and house influences are obvious. Although I enjoy the album some of the tracks are lacking something. Best tracks; "Happy House", "Accusations" and "Tonight".

I was checking out DFA Records today and found this game. It's a flash game which has two samples from the 8 tracks which feature on the 'DFA Remixes: Chapter Two' which you can then remix to make your own song. In all honestly the technology is pretty basic and their isn't a way to record what you do, but it's still fun to play around with. Check it out here.

If you haven't already got Spotify then I recomend that you download it. It allows you to stream thousands of songs which includes whole albums so you can decide if you want to buy the record or not. The other great feature is that people can set up playlists to share music with friends.

The suitably named S.C.U.M got their name from radical feminist Valerie Solanas' Society For Cutting Up Men Manifesto, which calls for the gendercide of all men. The dark name reflects their Gothic/Punk/Atmospheric sound which they have been playing across London since forming in 2008. Their debut release "Visions Arise" is a mesmerising anthem where you can see a clear Bauhaus and Joy Division influence in the echoing vocals.

S.C.U.M now have a series of releases under the title 'S.i.G.N.A.L.S'. The first release is going to be 'Warsaw' due to be out on 27th April. This will mark the start of their U.K tour and on the 29th April will be gracing us their their presence at Josephs Well. If you weren't lucky enough to see their memorable performance at Cockpit in October 08 they are definitely a band to see live. Their raw sounds, strobe lighting and front man Thomas Vain's theatrical performance leaves you not really sure what you just witnessed, but you know it was good.

On the 27th S.C.U.M are also going to be joined by the excellent An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump + more TBC.

E.Gold // Ones To Watch

E.Gold is a new London based musical project. Their newest track CPIBTA is a experimental disco influence track which features vocal from Alexis from The Violets and I love it. Although currently unsigned I dont think it will be long before it is released, so they are certainly ones to watch. On their myspace their are two remixes of CPIBTA, one by Passions and the other by Tomethy Furse (The Horrors/ Spider and the Flies) which are both great offerings.

Jon who helps with the blog, new band Twisted have their first gig tonight at the Royal Park Cellars. Their garage punk sounds somtimes reminds me of Sonic Youth. Not many out this week.

The No Pain In Pop label have been bringing you some of the best new bands recently such as Telepathe, Health and Banjo or Freakout. They have now released a eclectic mixpate of tracks which features the bands previously mentioned, Abe Vigoda, Pens and A Grave With No Name. It's only available on CD but for £5 it's going to be worth it.

Ulterior have been tearing up east London shows since forming in 2006. Their aggressive, raw sound has led them to being compared to the likes of Suicide, Jesus and Mary Chain and Big Black. This CD includes both singles '15' and 'Weapons' that have been released on the up and coming DiscError label and a few other new tracks. You can see Ulterior's signature raw live performance on the 1st May at Josephs Well.

This one is available for Pre-Order and isn't out until early May but as only 500 copies worldwide I would order in now. 'Headhunters' is Graffiti Island's best effort so far, it's a simple, bass driven Lo-fi track with the vocals falling in and out of spoken word. The artwork for it's pretty rad too.

I'll Be With You - Black Lips

Sorry for the lack of post from myself over the last couple of weeks, I've been away hitch-hiking to Africa.

The guys over at Bad Sneakers have got another awesome line-up at TJ's Woodhouse Club on the 20th May. Headlining is Atlanta's Black Lips who have been spreading their "Flower Punk" across the world since forming in 2000. Last month they released their 5th studio album '200 Million Thousand' which is again a great example of why they are going to continue to take over the world. Their renown crazy live performances should not be to missed. You can see their new video above for 'I'll Be With You'.

Joining Black Lips will be Times New Viking who aren't my favorite band from the NY scene but after getting their 'Stay Awake EP' they are growing on me, so ready to give them another chance. Finally on the bill is Mika Miko and Gringo Star.

With the festival season fast approaching now seems like a good time for a run through of the festivals hitting up Leeds over the next few months.

Fuse Leeds 2009//25 April - 2 May
Fuse is a contemporary music festival that celebrates the vibrant music scene in Leeds with a selection of specially commissioned pieces and exciting collaborations. Highlights look set to include The BBC Big Band performing new arrangements of hits by The Wedding Present, Spanish Bombs: A tropical tribute to the Clash and Dub Echoes - a new film on the history of dub featuring Lee Perry, King Jammy, Kode9 and Roots Manuva. Check the website for the full line-up of events.

Live at Leeds//1-3 May
Live at Leeds is a three day festival that brings you the best in local underground talent. I wrote a post about it a while ago which you can check out if you like. For more info and a list of confirmed bands go to the Live at Leeds website.

Stag & Dagger//22 May
Stag & Dagger is a festival taking place in three different UK cities on three consecutive days. Its coming to Leeds on 22 May and promises to deliver "one night of new music, DJs and partying". James has been following the festival pretty closely and gave you a list of confirmed bands a few weeks ago.

Leeds Festival//28-30 August
I don't think I need to say much about this behemoth of a festival. Weekend tickets sold out within 24 hours, a few day tickets are still available. It does looks like you're in for a good time if you did manage to get your mits on a ticket with Radiohead, The Prodigy and The Maccabees on the bill and loads more to be announced.

So I've just remembered that James asked me to look after the blog whilst he's hitchhiking his way across Europe. It would seem that I've disregarded my duties somewhat so I'm hoping to remedy this by writing a quick post now and hopefully something a bit meatier in the next couple of days.

Well, in a bit of a cop-out, I'll write about some bands that I've been listening to recently:

High Places
High Places are a duo from Brooklyn that play experimental, electronic folky kinda stuff. Their sound lies somewhere between Jimmy Tamoerello's Dntel and Animal Collective. I think they're excellent so check 'em:

My Friend lent me the album 'Glory Hope Mountain' a couple of weeks ago and I've been listening to it ever since. The Acorn are a band from Ottawa, Canada that play some really beautiful indie folk. They are playing at the Fuse festival in Leeds on 2nd May so I'd recommend giving them a listen before then.

This Animal Collective album was recorded in 2004 by Avey Tare and Panda Bear. It was recorded using only acoustic guitars and tribal drums and demonstrates a greatly stripped back sound. I only discovered this album a few weeks ago but I think its one of my favourites, although its a much calmer and more peaceful affair it loses none of what make Animal Collective great.

The Clean // Influential Artist

The Clean are little known first-wave punk band from New Zealand who have been making music since the late 70's. The bands line-up has changed over the years but has always been revolving around brothers Hamish and David Kilgour. The band disbanded for much of the 80's allowing members to work on other projects but came back together at the end of the 80's to continue making music. After reuniting their sound became more commercial but still had an experimental edge. In 2007 they went on their first world tour and released a live album from that tour. The band although only ever having any success in their native country of New Zealand have been influential for many bands. I'd defiantly recommend getting "Anthology" which is a collection of their early material which was put out in 2002 as many of the records were hard to get hold of. David Byrne will be performing live at Sheffeild City Hall on the 4th April. Sheffeild is only a 40 minute train journey away so it will be definately worth the trip. David will be performing material from his latest colabartion with Brian Eno "Everything that Happens will Happen Today" but also his songs from all his previous works, including Talking Heads songs. I know i've been blogging about this kid Wavves a lot since starting the blog, but he just keeps impressing me. Seeing him live was sick, his first record "Wavves" although a lot of it was a sonic assault of noise was great and now the release of his second album slightly confusingly also titled "Wavves" is even better. The songs in the second record are much more melodic but don't worry he still assaulting your ears with just as much loud noises. Check out some of my highlights.

I hadn't heard a thing about The Pains of Being Pure at Heart until a friend played me their record, I then realised that their self titled debut is one of only two records sold in Urban Outfitters. I must be finding out about them a bit late. These Brooklyn kids have made a pop band but you can see their shoegaze influences coming through to make a great noise-pop album. Definately one of the best albums of this year so far and one to get. Check out a few songs below.

New York Dolls // New Album

New York Dolls's today have announced that they will be releasing a new studio album on the 4th May. The new album is going to be titled 'Cause I Sez So' and has been produced by Todd Rundgren. The album will feature 11 new tracks and a new version on 'Trash' if you don't know the punk classic, you can download it below.

The Horrors // Countdown Over // Sea Within A Sea

The countdown on The Horrors website ended at midnight and revealed their new music video. The video is for a track called 'Sea Within A Sea' and is a big departure from their debut album 'Strange House'. Douglas Hart from The Jesus and Mary Chain has directed the new video which shows that the band have gone in a shoegaze direction, which I am a big fan of. Other changed are Rhys now on bass and Tom on synth.

The single which has been taken from their forthcoming album 'Primary Colours' which is due to be released on the 4th May. It has been produced by Geoff Barrow from Portishead and the single is available to download for free from their website if you join the mailing list.

The band have also released dates of a U.K tour and they are coming to Leeds on the 25th May and are playing The Brudenell Social Club. Tickets can be brought from here.

I have been very kindly sent a track from Leeds electronic music duo Worriedaboutstan. The band say that they make a mixture of post rock and IDM, although their newer material is heavily influenced by minimal techno. Their new album Arrivals is going to be released on Leeds based Gizeh Records in May but luckily we have a track for you to download of free now.

The Kills - Black Baloon 10"

The indie rock duo The Kills release their next single from their 2008 album "Midnight Boom". Although this isn't a signature song from The Kills with it being very much calmer and melodic, it's still one of my favourites from the album. On the flip side is two exclusive tracks '44' and 'weedkiller.

Televised Crimewave - Listen and Repeat 7"

This is the debut release, from one of the bands which emerged after Black Wire split up- Televised Crimewave. It's being released on Puregroove and has already been Artrocker's single of the week.

Hatcham Social - You Dig The Tunnel, I'll Hide The Soil - L.P

This is Hatcham Social's debut album, which has been produced by Tim Burgess (The Charlatans). Hatcham Social have received good reviews for this catchy indie pop album which has been put out by Fierce Panda.

Black Lips - 200 Million Thousdand - LP

The Black Lips return with their third studio album "200 Million Thousand". After the huge success of 2007's "Good Bad Not Evil" I'm sure this one will be just as well received.

Wavves - Wavves - LP
After seeing Wavves play at The Fenton a couple weeks ago I've been listening to his first record loads, it's a great mix of Lo-Fi and grunge. I can't wait to here his new album "Wavves" hopefully it will be just as good as the last one.

Rough Trade // BBC // TV Programme

Currently on BBC iPlayer there are two programmes about the indie record label Rough Trade. The first is titled Rough Trade At The BBC which is a series of live performances from artists who were signed to the label, it features The Smiths, Violent Femmes, Pulp and Antony and the Johnsons. My favourite performance is from Leeds Delta 5 who perform "Anticipation" a great post-punk tune.

The second show is called Do It Yourself: The Story Of Rough Trade. The show goes through the history of Rough Trade from it's humble beginnings of a record shop to becoming a record label.

Cage and Aviary // DFA

After playing all my disco records for hours last night I went to the record store today to go buy a few more. I found this offering from my favorite record label DFA. It's Cage & Aviary's single "Television Train", another great disco-house tune from James Murphy's label. Slightly more down tempo than most of the DFA stuff but still another good song. Check it out.

If your into italo-disco you should check out FABRICLIVE.36 mixed by James Murphy and Pat Mahoney. It's been out a couple years now but been listening to it a lot recently and still think it's great.

Alright Scenesters?

As hopeful bands around the world prepare to bend over for the musical big-wigs in Austin I thought I'd give you a few acts from the festival that I reckon are worth a listen.

Maps and Atlases
Maps and Atlases's first EP 'Trees, Swallows, Houses' offered a delightful mash of spazzy guitar work, chaotic drumming and elegant vocal melodies. Their second EP 'You And Me And The Mountain' showed a move away from the math-rock workouts of their first and delivered a more mature sound full of layered textures and harmonies. They are currently working on their first full length album which I can't wait for.

Titus Andronicus
Taking their name from Shakespeare's first tragedy, this New Jersey band play loud and raucous lo-fi punk that drips in angst and emotion. Their debut album 'The Airing of Grievances' is a rough and ready record laden with brilliant lyrics and melodies that seem to spring from nowhere. The Guardian called it 'An unholy collision of the Pogues, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, the Jesus and Mary Chain and even lost Leeds shouters the Three Johns'.

Sky Larkin
I'm sure that this band need little introduction. The Leeds band hit SXSW having just released their debut 'The Golden Spike'.

Grizzly Bear
I may well be preaching to the choir here, but hey ho. Grizzly Bear, a band from Brooklyn NY, play a dreamy blend of folky experimentalism. Their latest record 'Yellow House' is an album awash with colours and textures. Grizzly Bear use flutes, chimes, percussion and electronics to create songs that build to shimmering climaxes.

Obviously I'm not suggesting that these are the only worthwhile bands playing at SXSW but I hope you like some, or one, of the bands I've mentioned.

DIY Punk // Leeds // Next Week

On Tuesday (17th March) the Leeds hardcore scene's (relatively) elder statesmen The Dauntless Elite are playing at The Packhorse with Crazy Arm, Bangers and Pure Graft. The Dauntless Elite have been fairly quiet since the release of their excellent album "Graft" on Leeds' own Bombed Out Records almost two years ago, but they appear to be playing more regularly now and have returned with some excellent new material. This is one of several great shows Tiger Bear Promotions have in the pipeline, so keep checking this blog for more on those.

Then on Thursday (19th March) Dirty Otter presents Pneu (France), Shield Your Eyes and (the excellent) Uprights at Royal Park Cellars in Hyde Park. Pneu are a noisy lo-fi post-rock band, currently touring the UK extensively with Shield Your Eyes.

Heartbreak // NME Tour // New Remix

The italo-disco duo Heartbreak are due to be playing The Cockpit on 7th May. Unfortunately this is on an NME Radar tour alongside La Roux, Magistrates and The Chapman Family.

In anticipation for the tour Heartbreak have remixed La Roux - In For The Kill. They have managed to turn the song into a great disco tune, which you can download here.

Lunar Jam // Secret Location // Saturday 14th March

This Saturday if your not into going to Brighton Beach or Ipso Facto and Little Boots at Bad Sneakers maybe check out this underground disco party, Lunar Jam. It's being held in a secret location in Leeds which is an art gallery space, with special guest DJ Phoreski.

DEVO // First Album In 19 Years // Released This Autumn

DEVO after announcing that they will be performing their 1978 album 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo?' in full at the London Kentish Town Forum on May 6th. The pioneers of new wave have announced that they will be releasing a new album later this year. The album which is still yet to be named will be released in autumn this year. It's the first new music that the band will release since their 2007 single "Watch Us Work It".

Spider and the Flies // Vice Magazine // Mix pt. 1

Spider and the Flies is a side project of Tom Furse and Rhys Webb from The Horrors. They brought a bunch of old synths went into a studio with Barry 7 from Add N to (X) and produced a fantastic mini LP "Something Clockwork This Way Comes", which if you haven't already heard you should really check out. My personal favorite from the LP is "Jungle Planet".

Vice Magazine had the brilliant idea of asking these "record heads" to make a mix which you can download here. It is titled "Up" and is absolutely fantastic and luckily it's only pt. 1 of the mix. Pt. 2 "Down" is coming soon so we'll keep you posted.

Vivian Girls // New Album // Stag and Dagger

Today the Lo-Fi/Indie trio Vivian Girls announced on their twitter that they have finished tracking their second album, which they claim that they are 'psyched' about. Also it shows on their myspace as being confirmed for Stag and Dagger on the 22nd May at The Library Pub.

Ipso Facto // Gig Rescheduled // Saturday 14th March

For the second time now Ipso Facto's gig has been canceled. Ipso Facto said in a myspace bulletin "As Hatcham Social had to pull out of the leeds gig... The promoter cancelled the show. So we are now playing on Saturday 14th at the brudenell(The Faversham) with little boots! Sorry for any confusion! IF.x"

So Bad Sneakers Saturday 14th March at The Faversham both Little Boots and Ipso Facto will be performing.

The Horrors // Countdown To Single Release???

Southend's garage rock band The Horrors have started a countdown on their website today. It's unsure what they are counting down to but most people seem to be speculating that it's a release of a single. The count down is due to end at midnight on Monday 16th March. Their new album has been recorded and is set to be released later this year. We'll keep you posted on release dates and any live performances they confirm.

Brighton Beach will be back with residents Helen Baron and Tony Leighton play Britpop & Indie, alongside Classic 60's Soul, Garage & Rock'n'Roll, in Stylus. In Room 2 Gav Needham & guests play 60’s soul, northern, jazz, psych, garage & freakbeat. Brighton Beach is always a fun night and worth checking out.

Stag and Dagger // Friday 22nd May

Stag and Dagger is a festival brought to you by Adventures in The Beetroot Field, Margaret and Vice Magazine. It's first year last year was a great success with performances from the likes of Diplo, Archie Bronson Outfit, Hot Chip, Ladyhawke, Duke Spirit, Jay Reatard, Operator Please, Ed Banger, A Trak, The Metros and Filthy Dukes. This year the festival expanding and is taking place in 3 cities. London on 21st May, Leeds 22nd May and Glasgow 23rd May.

This years line-up was due to be announced at the end of February but currently hasn't been. So far the only band I know is confirmed is Telepathe, so it already looks like it's going to be a good one. We will keep you posted on the rest of the line-up when it's confirmed.

Raise The Roof made its return to the West Indian Centre on Friday to celebrate the coming of Spring with an Alice in Wonderland themed multimedia festival. Asking 'How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?' Raise The Roof presents an exciting world of visual and sonic art with live acts and djs, virtual graffiti, magic shows, dance acts, tarot reading and much more.

Of the live bands, African drummers 'Honeydrum' and dub collective 'Root One Band' were definite highlights. 'Honeydrum' had the room dancing and shaking with a mind-blowing display of African rhythm and soul and the 'Root One Band', with thumping bass lines, tight horns, big grooves and good vibes, sounded very impressive through the 30k High Pressure Soundsystem.

All in all, Friday night was flippin' excellent. If you were there, congratulations, if you weren't, you should have been! I'm sure Raise The Roof will be back to welcome in the summer so keep your eyes peeled.

Hello,

This is the first blog I have written for Leeds Beat. In fact, this is the first blog I have ever written. I’m throwing caution to the wind, waving goodbye to my blog-ginity and diving into bed with the blogging world.

So in keeping with the themes of this blog - “New bands, influential bands and events in Leeds” - I thought I would write about an upcoming event in Leeds featuring new and influential bands: Live at Leeds 2009.

Live at Leeds is back after two very successful years, bringing you the best in emerging regional talent alongside established national acts. The festival will take place at venues across the city on the Bank Holiday weekend of May 1st-3rd. Previous years have seen the likes of The Rascals, Metronomy, Wild Beasts and, unfortunately, The Pigeon Detectives taking to the stage. This year looks set to be a cracker with White Lies, Fionn Regan, The Maccabees and Art Brut on the bill.

The real delight of this festival, however, comes not from the headlining acts but from the 100 or so lesser known bands playing across the city, all of whom can be seen for the measly price of £10. Highlights include the brilliant Dartz!, local heroes Sky Larkin and Leeds grunge rockers Dinosaur Pile-up.

Wavves and Pens // 28th Feb // The Fenton

I went into the gig not really expecting too much. Pens matched my expectations only a couple half decent songs and a unenthusiastic performance. Wavves however completely surprised me, great energetic performance singing about skateboarding and smoking weed. They have totally converted me to the Lo-Fi scene and becoming one of my favorite bands so far of 2k9.
